Wood decks bring a warm, natural charm that only real lumber can offer. But with South Jersey’s changing weather, regular maintenance is key to keeping that wood rich in color and structurally strong. Here’s how to protect your investment and extend the life of your deck.

Make sure you are Regular Cleaning

Sweep weekly and rinse off dirt or debris. Use a mild wood-safe soap and a soft brush or broom. For grime or mildew buildup, use a deck-specific cleaner (never bleach—it can damage the grain).

Annual Deep Clean & Inspection

Once a year, give your deck a deep clean and inspection:

  • Keep your power washer set to low-pressure (under 1500 psi).
  • Let the deck dry for 24–48 hours.
  • Check for popped nails, loose screws, or soft spots.
  • Replace any damaged boards before sealing or staining.

Seal or Stain Every 2–3 Years

A protective finish keeps moisture out and sun damage away. Choose a high-quality transparent or semi-transparent sealer that enhances the wood’s natural tone. Apply in dry, mild weather and let it cure completely before use.
Pro Tip: South-facing decks may need touch-ups sooner due to UV exposure.

Seasonal Tips

  • Spring: Check for winter damage and clean off pollen.
  • Summer: RUBBER FEET! Keep furniture feet covered to prevent gouges.
  • Fall: Clear leaves weekly to prevent rot.
  • Winter: DO NOT USE A METAL SHOVEL!! Use plastic shovels only—metal will scar the surface.
